  • Acetyl cysteine 200 mg
Size: 30
Item Form: FC Tablets

Drug class:

Systemic Mucolytics

General information:

This medicine has been prescribed for you only. Do not pass it on to others. It may harm them, even if their signs of illness are the same as yours.

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet.

Mechanism of Action:

Mucolytic effects:

As a mucolytic, it is believed that the free sulfhydryl groups in acetylcysteine react with the disulfide linkages of mucoproteins in bronchial secretions. This, in turn, acts to decrease the hypersecretion and viscosity of mucus secretions of the lungs and aids in the removal of these secretions through coughing, mechanical mechanisms, or postural drainage.

Antioxidant effects:

Antioxidants such as acetylcysteine may prevent tissue damage to various organs by scavenging oxygen free radicals (e.g., superoxides) or by other poorly understood mechanisms, such as stabilization of cellular signal transduction systems and reduced apoptosis (programmed cell death).

Indications and Dosage:

Reduction of sputum viscosity.

Adult:

The recommended dose is 1 sachet taken three times a day, or as prescribed by your doctor.

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.

Pregnancy:

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine.

Due to the lack of sufficient data about the use of acetylcysteine in pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, this medicine can only be used in these situations under a doctor’s order.

Lactation:

Warnings/Precautions:

  • History of peptic ulceration.
  • Bronchial asthma
  • Cough relieving medicines (antitussives) used in combination with acetylcysteine can cause a dangerous build-up of secretions.
  • Speak with your doctor if you have problems coughing up phlegm, as you may need help to drain the phlegm from your airway.

Interactions:

  • Antibiotics: This medicine can prevent antibiotics (medicines which control or prevent infections) from working properly. If you are taking antibiotics, make sure you take this medicine two hours before or after taking your antibiotics
  • Nitroglycerin: This medicine may increase the blood pressure-lowering effect of nitroglycerin. Your doctor will need to monitor your blood pressure if you use nitroglycerin and acetyl cysteine at the same time.
  • Activated charcoal

Adverse reactions:

Diarrhea. fever. gastrointestinal discomfort. headache. hypotension. nausea. stomatitis. tinnitus. Vomiting.

Over dosage:

If you accidentally take more Acetylcysteine than you have been prescribed, contact your doctor or get medical advice immediately.
